Everyday Use, Susan Farrell Or Nancy Tuten - 870 Words

Susan Farrell or Nancy Tuten? â€Å"Everyday Use† is a story about family and heritage. Through various arguments the authors, Susan Farrell and Nancy Tuten, share their thoughts and ideas on Walkers meaning of the story. Although they both agree that the story has to do with heritage, Nancy Tuten’s ideas and Susan Farrell’s differ. The views of Nancy Tuten and Susan Farrell are very different. Nancy Tuten explains how language can affect people in a negative or a positive way. In a sense, Walker uses words to portray her message. Tuten mentions that Dee â€Å"privileges language over silence† (125). In the book, there are several instances where Dee uses her words to degrade her mother and sister; she also uses her words to get what†¦show more content†¦When Dee and Mama are talking about the quilts there was a loud banging noise made in the kitchen; Tuten says this was Maggie’s way of showing her distaste for Dee (127). This action along with pulling away from Hakim-a-barber’s handshake earlier in the story, shows that Maggie does not respect Dee. Tuten shows her readers that what Dee wants is superficial and that Maggie has a better understanding of heritage. Susan Farrell states in her article that in the story, Mama’s views of Maggie are not accurate. She makes the point that perhaps Mama’s views of Dee are not accurate either, because the story is told from Mama point of view and we never hear Dee’s side of the story (179). Farrell believes that Mama views Dee as a sort of goddess, she may even envy her. Susan states that, â€Å"Dee inspires in Mama a type of awe and fear more suitable to the advent of a goddess that the love one might expect a mother to feel for a returning daughter† (180). Later in the article, Farrell makes the point that what Mama’s thinks Dee wants may not actually be what she wants. This could just be a perception of what Dee wants. Farrell also points out other instances in the story that shows Dees actions contradicting Mama’s thoughts. One opposing thought between Farrell and Tuten is the scene where Dee is reading to Mama and Maggie. The ad agency tried to develop new look campaign, but this solution did nothing for La Shampoo sales and customers didn’t even noticed the change. This solution is good if the marketing researches found out the causes of the sales’ decline. Then the new advertisement’s campaign should focus in repairing La Shampoo image and correcting the mistakes that happened in the previous years. So to obtain this solution marketing researches should be done deeply to better understanding customers . Facts About the Brand: * Brand that has been used mostly between its competitors in the category for two decades must have strong brand equity. * La Shampoo has boor brand management ,because they went from the problem to the solution without auses diagnosis. * Restaging the brand will require a lot of resources. * The alternative proposed by Marni Shin are likely to be too late , the competitor already filled the shelves with such a product . My Recommendations: After doing all researches and surveys needed on the target segment which I think is better to be women between ages of 15 to 50, I suggest two marketing strategies. The first one is for the existing customer base who still buy the product and doesn’t like changes. The other one is for attracting new customer by introducing some values La Shampoo can produce to them. These two plans should consider the following: * * In doing the researches , should make sure about asking the right question to know the attitude for loyal and former users. * Today’s customers are very sensitive about the values they will get for each dollar they pay. So the advertising campaign must focus on the benefits consumer will have by using the brand such as healthy hair and easy style getting. Macbeth And Machiavelli From top to bottom of the ladder, greed is aroused without knowing where to find ultimate foothold. Nothing can calm it, since its goal is far beyond all it can attain. Reality seems valueless by comparison with the dreams of fevered imaginations; reality is therefor abandoned. "Many have dreamed up republics and principalities that have never in truth been known to exist; the gulf between how one should live and how one does live is so wide that a man who neglects what is actually done for what should be done learns the way to self destruction rather than self-preservation." Italian political philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) states that greed leads men to their downfall, a concept which is paralleled with Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. This play is the representation of human society in which Macbeth represents man. The play opens with 3 witches who honor Macbeth with three titles: "Thane of Glamis" (his present title), "Thane of Cawdor" (his son to be announced title) and the prophecy that he will be "king hereafter." Macbeth who is roused by his vaulting ambitions, lust for power, tempted by these titles, murders his rivals to the throne with his wife. As a result of his ruthless quest for power leads him to his fate. Erich Fromm (1900-1980), a psychologist once stated "greed is a bottomless pit which haunts man in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction. He who comes along greed is condemned to this bottomless pit." Shakespeare demonstrates that greed that harms others, destroys the holder: mentally and morally, and eventually leads to ones ultimate destruction. When man is driven by greed to achieving their goal, they are stripped away of their morals and ethics. Macbeth is fighting a war, a deadly game where man takes advantage of others to win and claim the title of king. "if it were done when ?tis done, then ?twere well it were done quickly. If the assassination could trammel up the consequence, and catch, with the surcease, success; that but this blow might be the be-all and the end-all here, but here, upon this bank and shoal of time, we'd jump the life to come. But in these cases we still have judgement here; that we but teach bloody instruction, which being taught, return to the plague of inventor: this even handed justice condemns the ingredients of our poison'd chalice to our own lips. " (Act I, Scene VII) Macbeth has confused feelings about murdering Duncan, his "worthiest cousin." He hesitates to murder Duncan because he is scared of the consequences which may somehow "return and plague" him. He questions to himself, "how would his new subjects react?" However, his ambition numbs the fear and the conscience concerning consequences and his morals. At this point, he is already morally degraded. Macbeth does not question the morality of the actions of what he is about to take but instead worries about the consequences he may have to face if he fails. Thus Macbeth does not fear or feel any moral remorse in committing the murder itself. "Our fears in Banquo stick deep; and in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be fear'd: ?tis much he dares: and to that dauntless temper of his murder he hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour to act in safety. There is none but he whose being I do fear: and under him, my genius is rebuked. " ( Act III, Scene II) Macbeth is irritated by Banquo, whose existence is a hinderence towards his fulfillment of the prophecies. "My lord, his (Banquo's) throat is cut; that I did for him. " (Act III, Scene II) Macbeth deals with this by murdering Banquo. However, this time he does not contemplate over whether or not to murder Banquo but the actions he takes are caprice. By the end of the play, Macbeth does not feel a bit of hesitation to taking the life of another. "Seize upon Fife; give to the edge o' the sword his wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line. " (Act IV, SceneI) Greed degrades a man's morals by blinding him of them, only allowing a narrowed vision of only their ambition. Greed destroys man from many aspects which one happens to be mentally. Although not directly, greed-driven actions bring regret and remorse and thus haunts one with guilt. To answer this problem, new talents must be f ound. This can be achieved by renewing business and management strategies. This would also include a program to enhance talent already in the company. Rewards and recognitions must be given either formally or informally. Other incentives may also be given. Successful implementation of these programs or strategies would contribute to the success of the company. Keywords: Rewards and recognition, valuing employees, global employability crisis Valued Employee Program Introduction â€Å"People are definitely a company's greatest asset because a company is only as good as the people it keeps.† This is a famous quote from Mary Kay Ash, a very successful American businesswoman. For a company to be a globally competitive one, it should know how to make its people competitive at the same time knowing how to keep them for long-term. This means having or discovering new talents and also giving rewards and recognitions to employees. According to Gallop (2006) as cited by Ascent Group (20 08), companies with high levels of employee satisfaction enjoyed higher return on investment. This is what our program wants to achieve. Satisfaction to the employee like rewards, recognitions, benefits, incentives, bonuses and satisfaction to the company in terms of increased sales, revenues and profits and also credibility will be achieved. Labor Force Situation As leaders transition toward growth, there is an increased focus on human capital which involves identifying and actively engaging the most critical employees, rapidly aligning the workforce around change and ensuring getting most of the dollar they spent (Aon Hewitt, 2011). Also, according to ManpowerGroup (2011), talent becomes increasingly difficult to find heading towards a global employability crisis. This means lesser assets to the company. Companies must reconsider work models and workforce strategies to execute their business strategies. Old assumptions on structure and organization of work plus the development of talent must be changed so as not to put the business in danger. These new strategies entail much effort to be put upon. It is becoming more and more difficult to find and engage the right employees (Ascent Group, 2011). Thus, more jobs are being difficult to fill. Based from the 2011 Talent Shortage Survey by the ManpowerGroup, the Top 10 Jobs Employers are Having Difficulty Filling Globally are as follows: 1) technicians; 2) sales representatives; 3) skilled trades workers; 4) engineers; 5) laborers; 6) management/executives; 7) accounting and
